TOPIC: Which guidelines to use?

Which guidelines to use? 1 year, 7 months ago #12

There are a variety of different accessibility standards and each has their pros and cons (some even conflict with one another on key points). We should decide on a standard and map out the exceptions/requirements needed in order to validate Joomla against. Please post your ideas and thoughts here.

I'd recommend the WCAG 2.0 guidelines. The WCAG 1.0 is outdated and the 508 guidelines are US specific.

IMO, WCAG2 needs to be viewed with caution; it isn't a panacea thet will ensure maximum accessibity. In some cases sticking tightly to WCAG specs may damage accessibility.

This is largely a result, of course, of progress made since these specs were drafted. Let's not forget WCAG2 took 5 years(!!) to draft and was published in 2006. A *lot* of progress has been made in the intervening 10 years and the web, and technologies used to interact with it, are very different than they were 10 years ago.

Yes, it is the best we have in terms of spec, but that doesn't mean we can't do better

What guidelines do you suggest we use? I agree that WCAG2 isn't perfect, but they are less out of date than others because they talk about abilities, not technologies. Guidelines don't make accessible sites but they are a good place to start.

My point is that we can't take WCAG2 ad verbatim and be under the impression that is the best that we can do in terms of accessibility. WCAG2 is still a valid starting point, we just need to treat these guidelines as we would any other 10 year old spec and apply our own experience and common sense.

Some of the most serious shortcomings are described here, and make a very interesting read: www.alistapart.com/articles/tohellwithwcag2

One possible alternative, as referenced in that article is WCAG+Samurai - wcagsamurai.org/errata/intro.html which was authored specifcally to address perceived shortcomings in WCAG2. It is certainly not easy to argue against WCAG+Samurai errata.

WCAG2, level AA has become the de facto minimum for most government entities. Fortunately most of these standards are complimentary (at least in spirit) and achieving one puts you well down the path to achieving most.

The advantage of Samarai as an "interpretation" of WCAG re-expresed as concrete objectives is that it's achievable and compliance is clearly attained or not attained - there are no gray areas for interpretation like "avoid ...".

As a starting point, first release, accomplishing WCAG2, level AA would be a great start and then reassess and enhance from there.
