The module positions could also be better as well. When using the beez template to have a module placed on the left side it used something like "position-8" or something like that which as someone who has a lot of modules to keep track of it is not a good name for a left menu.

So let the left bar be called "left" for the module positions and so on. This way it will be simple to place modules. A module map would also come in handy, many templates people make these days have these. So why not the core templates?

A position-8 is not only left, it depends on your sub template or grid. I think that fixed positions for modules would be a nice feature, like left, header-3, component-top.

The template have to route a module position-x to a position left. While the real position of position-8 depends on your grid, maybe the position left is the 4. row and the 1. column in the grid and part of a component row.

rows:

1 top
2 header
3 topmenu
4 component
5 user
6 footer

Greetings,
How about installing Joomla by default with a clean, blank template?

Three positions: header, body, footer.

No CSS assumptions.

Thanks,
Matthew

Hi Matthew - you sneaked in there without me noticing!

Yes, I think a proper, skeleton template with basic CSS (no values), Obvious html overides and such like would make a lot of sense.

It probably would not be the one that was set as default, but can be used as an immediate,"get developing" template - "Copy this template to a name of your choice and start developing"

It is a pain to hunt round for the perfect starter template!

Going back a few points, I don't understand the need for more than a default template. They become a burden for support, and you shouldn't change them anyways (or an update might overwrite your changes).

Have a system default, thats basic and look at how Wordpress has just a very vanilla theme. It works for them, it can work for us.

Installation presets is a completely different discussion though.

I agree. But let's leave the default template as clean as possible. Anyone who wants a full template can shop around for other offerings, but the one that ships with Joomla should be a proper starter.

Thanks,
Matthew

+100 for Clean as possible. In Square One I opted for a very minimal but clean design done by Matt Thomas. Its perfect for the fall back.

There does need to be some regard to showing off Joomla when it is installed - not everyone is a hard nosed developer!

However, I also see the need for a very good developers template that really just has all the required code, a typography CSS (no values) a layout CSS - that sort of thing - and a bit of basic documentation to get people going.

The advantage of such a template being shipped as part of Joomla and being separate from the "Show off" template, is that it would be up to date.

You could have this as part of installation where you can choose a demonstration template along with the sample content.
