TOPIC: Joomla! 3.0 UI feedback and bugs

Joomla! 3.0 UI feedback and bugs 9 months, 3 weeks ago #911

Hi guys

I started testing 3.0 the below is general UI feedback and bugs I encountered. I am not sure you bugs reported, so Ill also publish them here with {b} prefix, and you can ignore them if you dont need them now.

I used template7 from github.

Before we begin: I love the current version already, lots improvements!

{b}Site edit article buttons
In the site when editing an article, the editor buttons are not aligned correctly.

{b}Installer: no errors (mysql)
When going threw the installer, I noticed that there is no warning when the MySQL details are incorrect (incorrect password). So you dont get a warning and cant continue to the next step. I noticed errors missing in more locations, maybe they are just not implemented yet?

{b}Article manager ordering save button
When ordering in the article manager, there is no save button for saving the adjusted ordering.

Saving a configuration
When I am, for example in Article Manager, open the options/config, I am redirected to the new configuration interface (nice!), when closing/saving, I am not redirected back to the Article Manager, but to the control panel. Off course, it would be better/more user friendly to be redirected back to the extension I was in before I opened the configuration.

Article manager: ascending/descending
This dropdown could be full length of the word "ascending", without the ... and cut off text.

Close vs Cancel
In some pages "Close" is used (Article Manager), in others "Cancel" (Banners). Are you aware of this? Would you agree its logical to use Close or Cancel in all cases? I can list all the places for you if you want me to.

Copy item name to menu item name
When a menu item is created, it might be user friendly to automatically copy the item name (article, contact etc) to the menu item name. For example, when creating a menu item to a "single article", copy the selected single articles name to Menu item title. In most cases they will be the same anyway, and the user can then change it by clicking the field and entering another name if he needs to.

Order in "Select a menu item type"
This is a big one for me in 2.5 at the moment. How is the menu item type list ordered now? Because in 2.5 when installing an extension the list has a different order every time you open it, so you are searching for the correct component (or even "Articles") every time.

I would suggest it is ordered alphabetically in 3.0, then the user will always know to expect that. e would even improve it further later, by adding letters ont he top or side (A B C) like the iPhone contacts app has, so you can jump to "V" for Virtuemart and save even more time.

But a first step would be to order alphabetically.

Show title, hide
In the Module edit view (Module Manager), the Show title Hide option has no effect, the title is always shown

Edit view settings/user menu's
When an edit view is opened (article edit view, module edit view), the main menu in the administrator is grayed out, same as the behavior in 1.5, 2.5 etc. So you need to close the edit view before you can navigate to another page. In 3.0 this is still happening, but not to the new menus "Settings" and the users menu.

Thanks for the reports! I've just pushed an update to the article editor and will take a look at the others

Hey, where you are see those two words titles?
I mean, Title field is to narrow so please stretch it a little bit to show more of the title.

Another thing is, that.

First sight: Edit an article
Eyes goes under to see SAVE?
No, they should see article Title and next content. Then goes to right to save or cancel when finish. So save/cancel is not needed at first sight but LAST. I don't get why it's not so obvious to you.

So my opinion move that two buttons inline with Edit an article at right is much reasonable. One line less. Task Information and Content at first then apply or not.

Much like the UX in editing an email in Gmail, we want the Save and Cancel buttons to be the first things you see in the form and consistently place there across all frontend forms

But it's not mail or draft.. Really I don't like very much buttons under form. Every time scroll to save or cancel is a nightmare. But this is too much. Content it a king. Not buttons witch(sorry ) which are almost everywhere the same, and YOU SEE very clearly when they are at right. So there is no UX mistake.

When create new e-mail you have in gmail whole row of buttons. They just need space. So this is not the same!

But the same time buttons to reply & other functions IN dropdown when you read the message is AT RIGHT of the title.

This is small thing. I just say what I think it's more sensible in this place.

If you want to take Google Mail as the example:

When creating a new email, the view is fullscreen so you don't have to scroll. The edit area scrolls, but the buttons are always in view.

When replying to an email you do have to scroll... and Google Mail then shows the send/save/discard buttons both above and below the edit area.

So my view on this would be: when you need to scroll, show the button at the top AND at the bottom of the form.

In this case I think its more important to be consistent, and then its logical to have it at the top, same as the administrator views. For forms it is indeed best practice to add submit buttons at the bottom, but this is not 100% a web data form. Anyone using it knows it a "edit article" form.

Top and bottom could be an idea, but I personally really dont think its needed.

We are talking more about personal preference then best practices I think. In that case, let stick to Joomla! defaults, which is top.
