I am testing Peters work on the installer from here:
github.com/nonumber/joomla-cms/tree/installer
It's really looking good already! There are a few "small" improvements which have a major impact on usability!
A few bugs, and a few ideas:
STEP 1
- Language selection: can we use the same function as the Joomla! 2.5 multi language plugin/module. It recognizes the users browser language and sets that as default. the user can still change it, but in the case of Dutch users with Dutch browser language, it will preset to Dutch and load as Dutch immediately.
- Rename "Meta Description" to just "Description". Might be less intimidating to non-techie users and basically says the same.
- Remove Meta Keywords because?
www.mattcutts.com/blog/keywords-meta-tag-in-web-search/
STEP 2
- Using incorrect MySQL details does not throw up an error message in step 2. Tested in Chrome and Safari.
STEP 3
- Email Configuration: yes, thank you!
- Is the "Include password in email" option really needed? Default user manager also sends password in emails, and so do many Joomla! extensions and web services a like. What do you think?
- The "Admin password" characters are just 3 stars, the password used is longer then that?
- Might be more logical to have the "Main configuration" left, all rows (6) under that, next to it the "Database configuration".
CONGRATULATIONS
- For new users it might be better to change "Site" to "View the site, what visitors will see" and "Administrator" to "View the administrator, where you manage the site". An explanation of what the difference is between the site and administrator basically.
- At "Joomla! in your own language" there can be confusion because people already selected a language when starting the installer. They might think "I already selected a language". Maybe the text should be "The new Joomla! installation will be available in English by default. To install your own language, visit the Joomla! Community Site for language packs." Then make -Joomla! Community Site for language packs- a link, but also add a button (grey like the "site" button) "Download languages" or something.
- Im wondering if we need to show the "Remove installation folder" at all? Cant you integrate that into the Site and Administator buttons? So when they are clicked, the installation folder is removed automatically. One less option if thats possible.
- Maybe we can add a link to
docs.joomla.org/ om the confirmation page? eg. "New to Joomla!? Visit our documentation."
CONFIGURATION DETAILS MAIL
- Add a URL to the site and administrator. For example:
Below you can find the configuration settings for a newly setup Joomla! website.
You will find the site (what visitors see) on
www.xxx.xxx/
You will find the administrator (where you manage the site) on
www.xxx.xxx/administrator
