You are rightly concerned over user interaction with Joomla yet it seems the Joomla developers continue to shoot themselves in the foot by making the releases migrations and not updates
Mambo to Joomla accepted 1.0 to 1.5 sort of accepted (given the then promises of future upgradeability) 1.5 to 2.5 - very poorly supported - difficult process, almost impossible for those that already migrated 1.0 to 1.5 and with TP developers trailing off.
Initially big celebration at announcement that after 2.5 updating would be simple - flag waving loud cheers from the crowd - and the now the latest bombshell in the works with 3.0B1 release that 2.5 to 3.x is to be a migration again.
What on earth is going on.

Apparently it should not be as bad as 1.5 -> 1.6, more of a one-click solution. Somewhat worried about templates, though. And it always sucks for extension devs! Might cause some to become fed up and leave the community. Still waiting for more official info about the migration process..
