I'm seriously questioning the timing for this "request for feedback". Isn't it a bit too late to pose that question now? Let's assume that Kyle's work goes out (you certainly hinted at the option), then what? Maintain the status quo?

On a side note, I'd really like to see the input of the person that is apparently the reason behind this thread.

1. Do you use a framework? Is so what is it?

Yes, I have used Bootstrap. Because I was doing a Startup Weekend style event and the Python developer I was working with wanted to use it.

2. What are the top three things you look for/use in a framework?

  • Documentation
  • Functionality
  • Userbase

3. Have you used any of the above frameworks? What was your experience?

Yes, Bootstrap. It worked fine.

4. Which frameworks do you recommend staying away from?

Anything esoteric.

5. If you had to choose one framework for Joomla, what would it be?

Bootstrap.

That's OK. Feel free to question it. But requesting feedback should be a perpetual process in an open source project. It's never too late.

Sometimes maintaining the status quo is a better option. Is it in this case? Answer the questions in the first post.

No one person is the reason behind this thread. The PLT wanted to have a gauge of what the community thought about using Bootstrap or other options. No conspiracy theories necessary.

Me too. At the Dutch Joomla! days 2 weeks ago I already heard doubt from PLT members that Kyle's work was "the way to go", they referred to it as "just a test/example". But that strikes me as odd as its the only test I know of, its on the JUX website, and he is making awesome progress!

1. Do you use a framework? Is so what is it?

A little. We are playing with Bootstrap as an option to base our new website template on. It looks really good. I am not familiar with the other frameworks you mentioned. It seems Bootstrap is what most people are talking about.

2. What are the top three things you look for/use in a framework?

The idea is that all elements already have a design/style, so we (as extension developers) can use that default style. On one side it saves us time, but too me the biggest benefit is that we get a more consistent UI. If all elements (buttons, button groups, tables, list etc) already have a design (and have the same design) we do not have to design it, and others also don't, so we dont get 5 different button group styles in Joomla!.

3. Have you used any of the above frameworks? What was your experience?

Played with Bootstrap, it looks good. I don't have experience with the others so can not compare them. What I liked about bootstrap is that the default styles look nice and natural. And it has lots and lots of elements already designed.

4. Which frameworks do you recommend staying away from?

5. If you had to choose one framework for Joomla, what would it be?

Bootstrap!

Beyond that, Bootstrap seems to be the one gaining traction in the Joomla ecosystem with JomSocial, Joomlashack and RedComponent all on record as moving their products to Bootstrap.

Add us (Chill Creations)! Seven current extensions and the four in development will fully adopt a UI based on Bootstrap.

Finally, there's Kyle. It's often said in Joomla and open source that what gets done is what people step up and do. Kyle has stepped up and led on this. He's done a lot of the work, has communicated well and has proven he has what it takes to lead this to completion in time for September.

+1

I also agree with others, this might be the right time to make the big step forward, and take on the UI and the javascript framework, by moving to Bootstrap.

I have used:

  • Gantry
  • T3
  • BoilerPlate

2. What are the top three things you look for/use in a framework?

  1. Responsive / Mobile Features
  2. Layout Features (grids, columns, etc)
  3. Ease of customization

3. Have you used any of the above frameworks? What was your experience?

From the ones mentioned I briefly explored BoilerPlate. I never brought my exploration into the Joomla world so I'm not sure that it applies, but I felt it accomplished my needs.

Similarly, I have explored bootstrap, mainly because I was aware of Kyle's work and the fact that the Joomla project was planning to update Joomla 3.0, it was an important tool to learn. I found that the documentation for bootstrap, and the sample code for implementing it's elements was very easy. The code is easy to read and I did not feel as it was lacking in features.

4. Which frameworks do you recommend staying away from?

Anything that isn't able to meet the needs of the Joomla Project.

5. If you had to choose one framework for Joomla, what would it be?

Bootstrap would be my top choice. I have great respect for the people who are working on implementing Bootstrap, and quite frankly I trust their expertise and experience. The limited experience I had with bootstrap also made me understand and agree with the implementation being one that would benefit the project.

Frankly every extension has usability needs, and right now extension providers are building components and the accompanying layouts to meet their needs, if there is a single tool that is able to meet all their needs, all at once, it is something that the Project needs to consider fully. Also the fact that someone is willing and has been implementing Bootstrap with extensive time, and will continue to show support for it, makes it the best option. No one has volunteered to implement into Joomla any other framework to my knowledge.

I withdraw all my comments on this thread in protest at the censorship by Ron Severdia. I have seen the deleted comments as they are emailed to any one who is subscribed. They were perfectly valid points. Shame on you.
